Google has officially renamed the latest version of its Android mobile OS from Android N to Android Nougat (officially as Android 7.0 Nougat ), not Nutella as the public wanted or Neyappam as majority of the Indian wanted. The announcement of the new name was made at the company’s headquarters in Mountain view, California.
As is now the custom; the Android Nougat statue has replaced that of Android Marshmallow at the Googleplex. This year Google decided to engage the public (Android users) in naming the latest version of Android yet, although the company had the final say in choosing.
For those who don’t know, Nougat is a “family of confections made with sugar or honey, roasted nuts, whipped egg whites and sometimes candied fruit” according to Wikipedia. There is still no timeframe for the Public release of Android Nougat but a developer preview has been around since March 2016.
Announced at the Google I/O 2016 , the new release brings improved and new features such as direct reply notifications, multi-windows support, picture-in-picture mode, improved battery saving with Doze, Night mode, New Settings menu and the Daydream – Virtual reality platform for Android.
